Home computer terminals, communication satellites, and video telephones are part of our technology today. The remainder of the book presents a variety of case studies relating to the development of telecommunications services and technology. These studies show the influence that political and economic constraints have on technological development. Examples come from radio broadcasting, television data transmission, satellite communications, the telephone, and related areas. Finally, the book examines projections of future developments and proposes ways for controlling them in an equitable manner.

During the weekend of September 26-28, 1997, the University of Memphis sponsored an important symposium, "The Ethics of Electronic Information in the Twenty First Century." The symposium focused on the ethical implications of the expansive and pervasive growth of information technology throughout the world. Scholars from four continents gathered to present their ideas on what they considered to be the significant issues resulting from this growth. The symposium's purpose was to make people conscious of issues and to accelerate discussion of these issues, particularly as they relate to the Internet. Ethics of Electronic Information in the Twenty-First Century, is a compilation of the proceedings of the symposium. Topics included are access to information, Internet ethics and free speech, the ethics of electronic information in China today, privacy and the Internet, regulation of information and Internet commerce, copyright in the electronic environment and libraries of the twenty-first century.
It's a business truism nowadays that electronic commerce is a volatile, rapidly changing landscape. Despite recent discouraging trends, the fact remains that e-commerce is an integral force in business that must be reckoned with.Current research, however, has been limited to several narrow approaches, such as documenting economic performance, describing business models, and generating new applications and technologies. Charles Steinfield calls instead for an examination of how e-commerce influences fundamental relationships between consumers and firms, across firms, and between firms and the larger society in which they operate. New Directions in Research on E-Commerce offers an international group of scholars and practitioners representing eight countries at the cutting edge of electronic commerce. The essays are divided into four basic topics: understanding consumer responses to Internet stores; market structure and business-to-business e-commerce; e-commerce and industry structure case studies; and social and policy concerns in e-commerce. Deployments of Tablet PCs span all the K-12, higher education, and graduate levels and deal with an amazingly diverse range of subject areas, including geology, writing, mathematics, computer science, Japanese language, physics, engineering, business, economics, and technical communications. Despite the diversity of content areas, many deployments generate a singular passion among students and teachers. In April of 2006, a group of educators gathered to exchange ideas at the First Workshop on the Impact of Pen-based Technology on Education (WIPTE). The editors have selected a subset of papers that were presented at WIPTE for inclusion in this book. The papers have been selected for their broad appeal, diverse content, and insightful evaluations. The collective experiences of these authors will help the reader to identify best practices with regard to the educational use of pen-based computing.
