About the Editor(s):

Richard Herr, professor of history emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, has spent a number of years in Western Europe and Mexico and has published in the fields of modern French and Spanish history.  His latest book, Rural Change and Royal Finances in Spain at the End of the Old Regime (1989), has drawn him into the broad field of European and American rural history.  He has organized courses on rural history for undergraduate and graduate students.  THis book is the outgrowth of one of his National Endowment for the Humanities seminars for college teachers.
