These essays were prepared for a conference held in Tallinn, Ethiopia, under the auspices of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the International Research and Exchanges Board.

About the Editor(s):

Morton Rothstein is professor of history at the University of California, Davis, where he has been the editor of Agriculture History since 1984. He was written widely on U.S. trade in agricultural commodities and on planter-businessmen elites in the antebellum South.

Daniel Field is professor of history at Syracuse University, specializing in Russian history, on which he has written many books and articles. He served as the editor of The Russian Review for a full term in the 1980s and translated the articles of Russian scholars for the special issue of that publication devoted to quantification.
