About the Author(s):

Douglas Slaybaugh is associate professor of history and American studies at Saint Michael's College in Vermont.  He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in history from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. from Cornell University.  Professor Slaybaugh has taught at Cornell, Texas Tech Univeristy, Wells College, Ithaca College, and the State University of New York College at Cortland.  His research interests are in biography and political history.
